Suggestions for safe home storage of handguns

If anyone has any suggestions about the safe home storage of handguns I would appreciate it. I have 2 children under the age of 10, so safety is very important. Since you may be willing to use a modest safe to keep the kids out and run the risk that a serious burglar will find it, I suggest you consider one of the units that mounts in the closet wall, between the studs. These offer fair security, are cheap, easy enough to install, are easily concealed behind clothes and yet readily accessible for “bump in the night” duty.

One option is to wear the key around your neck, this keeps it handy and out of the kids hands. Don’t try hiding the key or the gun itself, remember how well that worked last Christmas? I purchased on of the “quick access” pistol safes. I cost around $100 and is is very easy to access the handgun. Access is controlled by 5 buttons you can set in any sequence to allow the door to open. It is a heavy box just big enough to store one handgun, but you can get one big enough to store two. It is 100% safe around children, yet you can access the gun inside in seconds. I have the same problem as you with a 4 year old in the house, and this setup even makes my wife happy.

If you will be using one or more guns for home defense, the best solution I’ve seen so far is called the Gun Vault (there are other names for similar devices from different manufacturers). It’s a black box with a spring-loaded door that pops open when you press a sequence of buttons on the control panel. The control panel buttons are located in indentations on the top of the box, so you can find the right buttons in the dark. Voila! Instant access to the gun in an emergency, but totally safe from the kids. I assume you are talking about a gun for defensive purposes — so you need near instant access. I have a big Browning safe for gun and ammo storage, but I wanted an instant access security system for my home defense gun.

I use a small lock box (I forget where from). It cost about $80. The 5 button system can be set to any combination you want. I really like it. I couldn’t see fumbling with rotating combinations or keys in the middle of the night. I set my combination so it’s easy to do w/o looking. If you will send me an email or something I’ll dig up the address of the company. My wife keeps one in the van for her .38 velcro ed to the carpet. We are very happy with these type safes.

Change in equipment for increase in storage capacity

you place a massive spinning pipe under the car won’t the gyroscopic force make it hard to steer? I know with a disk you get some torque problems when you add or remove power, but with the axis of rotation vertical it does not affect your steering significantly. How much force would you need to overcome the effect of placing the axis horizontally? I have chosen to collate our various correspondences into one posting because the train of thought was getting rather convoluted. I now post the complete proof that a cylinder (or disc) will have greater rotational inertia than a pipe (or ring) if the two have the same outer radius and have the same material density.

Working the equations out from first principles using a REFERENCE MASS is necessary because the equations that you posted do not use the same mass terms. Direct comparison of the two equations is misleading and could direct the reader to the wrong conclusion i.e that a pipe has greater ‘I’ than a cylinder. I will now derive general equations for a ring or pipe, and then develop the equation further to the specific case in your item 1). Of course an increasing radius will increase ‘I’, but you are changing the basis of the discussion.

The original question was: is a pipe or cylinder the best tool for the job of storing rotational energy, given that the two have the same outer dimensions. That is, which has the greatest ‘I’? Now, M is a constant (it is our REFERENCE mass of the whole disk irrespective of the size of hole), ‘a’ is also a constant because the disc & ring have SAME outer radius. Thus ‘I’ must reduce as ‘b’ increases. So ‘I’ for a ring is always smaller than ‘I’ for a disc given that the two have the same external dimensions & have the same material density.

Vacuum Storage Bag

Vacuum Compressed Storage Bag saves your home storage space upto 75% and keep your things moisture-proof, mildew-proof, dust-proof, germ-proof, odor-proof, insect proof. Magic Hanger triple your closet space. It is an excellent help mate when traveling.Last year there was a brief spate of publicity about the use of flywheel energy storage systems to power automobiles. These articles usually described the problems associated with operating a flywheel in a moving, vehicle.

It strikes me that a much more sensible application of flywheels would be in home energy storage, replacing batteries in an independently powered home. Is anyone pursuing this application? If not, what is the hang-up? The hang up is that very few people have the ability to design and build an efficient infinitely variable speed transmission. Especially one that will turn a sizable mass at 100K rpm’s or so. This is a project that I strongly suggest “don’t try this at home” The destruction and death that can result from the disintegration of the massive flywheel is why.

I wouldn’t trust the few words of this individual, from what I have seen in previous answers to peoples questions to this news group he has been entirely negative to everything! I suggest that you go to your local library and research a little bit on flywheels, then search the net for the name of a professor of physics or some one with an energy background. Not true. If you are a ‘newbie’ or selective reader you may only have seen responses to messages of an ‘overly optimistic’, naive or provocative nature.

There are a lot of misconceptions and outright scams in renewable/alternative energy, which some people here try to eliminate. Gene may be a bit quick to ‘pounce’ sometimes but his remarks are by no means ‘entirely negative to everything’. Scams and fantasy are emphatically rebutted, but Gene has posted numerous constructive replies to reasonable questions.

Home storage tracking

We are temporarily moving into an apartment. We are selling our 3600 sq ft. home and have a lot of belongings we need to store on a month to month basis until we move into a new home. We do NOT want to pack ourselves. Or self-store. Can anyone give us an idea of who does this well and can be trusted to make this as painless as possible. Try Be-kins Moving & Storage (or a similar company that has local warehouse space. Mayflower might be another alternative.)

For a price they will box your belongings and place them into large wooden vaults and store everything in their warehouse. Unfortunately, other than knowing this service is available, I don’t have a real good handle on how much it could cost you. Delivery Limited on Denton Drive. They will give you the most painless move you can ask for. Delivery Limited does most of the moves for the design trade, total white glove service. Everything is stored in a temp controlled warehouse. A little more expensive than your usual movers, but if you have expensive furnishings, worth every penny.

This may be off-topic, I’m not sure where to look….. Can anyone direct me to a web site with information on storage of paint and other flammable/hazardous chemicals in the home? Can anyone recommend a device that can be attached to a wall and provide a secure anchor point to loop around a padlocked cable for board storage. How about a long bolt right through the wall to the inside? Anti-theft screws (with heads that drive only one way)? (I’d guess any device relying on being driven/screwed in from the outside could be pried out, though.

Mass document storage

I have one main Group wise server running a post office (its agent) for the users’ mailboxes, the MTA and WIGWAG. I also have another server running another post office (for indexing only) holding the documents library. The library has its own storage structure (ie, not using the post office storage space). I need to move the documents library to the main Group wise server since the other server will be removed from the tree since it’s outdated and not scheduled to be replaced. Anybody can point me to instructions on how I can do this (couldn’t find any)?

You can’t move it as such, create a new one under the main PO, then use mass document operations to move the documents from one library to another. Ensure that any custom fields in the old library are in the new one, also document numbers will/may get changed. Because every user keeps a reference of the doc, that reference also pulls in the word lists for all those documents to the local account, so that it can be searched locally, and every one has to be updated when there is any change to the document.

Also, just like no one ever deletes old files, no one ever deletes old doc refs that are no longer used any more. Most people here manage OK with the Documents folder, and only a few have increased the limit beyond the standard 50 document history list. Hmm, searching is done by the server. Why have the server the burden of searching for documents if the users can simply double click on them? I never rub out or sand the finish on the hidden parts, though. Rightly or wrongly, I figure coating is all that’s necessary.

Accessing the storage directories

The purpose of this memo is to provide sufficient information for evaluation of the WordPerfect Office 4.0 (WP Office) security system. The security system consists of restricting network access to and encryption of sensitive and strategic information stored within the WP Office system. The system administrator controls network access by assigning only necessary access rights to end users. Encryption is internal and automatic.

Network Access The system administrator can do much to ensure the security of information stored within the WP Office system by assigning the recommended network access rights to WP Office directories. Post Office Directories A store-and-forward messaging system such as WP Office requires a set of directories on the network file server for storing and queuing messages. Storage directories contain the message database, the user databases, and attachment files, while queue directories contain message packets in transit. In WP Office, the set of storage and queue directories, along with other directories necessary to WP Office operation, is called a post office.

All databases, attachment files, and message packets are encrypted (the WP Office encryption system is discussed later in this memo) while stored in the post office to protect them from unauthorized access. Encryption is necessary because WP Office users need at least the “Read” network access right to the storage and queue directories in the post office. If a user has “Read” access to a directory, it must be assumed that the user can look at and make copies of any file in that directory. Encryption ensures that a user cannot decipher the information in a file simply by viewing its contents.

Non-profit seeks office storage cabinet

A Melon Park non-profit organization, the Humane Education Network, is expanding its office and is looking for an office storage cabinet. Ideally this would be about 6 ft high (80 inches would be too high, given the space it has to fit into), maybe 3 or 4 ft wide, maybe 15 inches deep. But beggars can’t be choosers and we are flexible on the exact dimensions. The Humane Education Network campaigns against cruelty to animals, and is “503(c)”. I believe this means that the value of any donated item is tax-deductible to you. Ideally we are looking for a freebee, but I could probably shell out a small amount if that would help. We can arrange transport (somehow – I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it).

This is a bit of a wild shot in the dark, but if anyone reading this has such a beast that they would like to send our way, I’d very much appreciate hearing from them! Recommend storage facility in Tucker/Norcross area?

Can anyone recommend a storage facility in the Tucker/Norcross area? I’m moving to Atlanta soon and will initially live in an apartment, need to store my house-full of stuff somewhere safe for a while. Preferably climate-controlled, but I think my stuff can survive without it. My landlord has suggested “Shure-Gard.” Does this company have a facility within 15-20 miles of I-85/Jimmy Carter? I’ve checked the phone book, consulted maps but can’t trust either to be current, nor do I know the city very well yet; can’t see an address listing and recognize where that is. Everybody has a facility within 15 to 20 miles of that intersection. Probably within 3 miles! Shur Guard is all over town. But I feel your pain having to move to Nor cross!

Hope ya like LOTS of VERY SLOW traffic! I wonder if Ray locks his car up at night. Not merely lock the car doors and take the keys, but lock it inside a secure building, making sure it’s in an undrivable condition inside that storage facility? And does he feel that if you can afford a car, you can afford to buy a secure car storage location? Where would be a good place to rent a place to store several large pieces of luggage while we go touring upstate for 2 weeks? Preferably a location that is easily assesible by public transport in midtown Manhattan? Are you staying in a hotel in Manhattan before going upstate? Some hotels will keep luggage for guests, although I don’t know if they would do it for 2 weeks.

Most storage facilities are for longer periods and would not be economical. Since September 11, most lockers have been removed from train and bus stations. Still you could check Grand Central train station, Port Authority of NY & NJ Bus Terminal and Greyhound or Trailways bus stations. Thanks for mentioning the lockers. What I had in mind was some facility where, say, NY residents would store their stuff when they move out of state for a few months. I used to rent such storage space (UHaul?) when I was living in California, but I am not sure about metro NYC. These places exist and I think they are called mini storage or something like that. One might browse the Yellow Pages. Probably more of them in the boroughs other than Manhattan but there may be some there also.

Mini-storage facilities

Does anyone know of a municipality that requires interior landscaping inside the actual mini-storage area? We require screening, of course, and shading (which can be accomplished in the buffer yard) of 20% of the impervious surface, but I’ll sincerely interested to know if any municipality requires actual landscape islands or planters to be mixed in with the storage buildings and drive aisles? “It is a universal fact that where the value of land is the highest, civilization exhibits the greatest luxury side by side with the most piteous destitution.

To see human beings in the most abject, the most helpless and hopeless condition, you must go, not to the unfenced prairies, … but to the great cities where the ownership of a little patch of ground is a fortune” Storage Management API Architects to design the user interface for the client product. * User/Support Interface Design: You will use your knowledge of the operational requirements of a large (UNIX or NT) storage facility to design a user friendly, Plug, Play and Forget style interface for the products. * Product Automation: You will work with the software development team to automate as many management functions as possible.

Where to build a grain storage unit?

Loss in value of positive wheat. The owner of the grain storage facility will be compensated for the loss in value of positive wheat. Compensation will equal the estimated market price for the relevant class of wheat minus the actual price received for the wheat. The estimated market price will be calculated by APHIS for each class of wheat, taking into account the prices offered by relevant terminal markets (animal feed, milling, or export) during the relevant time period for that facility, with adjustments for transportation and other handling costs. However, compensation will not exceed $1.80 per bushel under any circumstances.

Compensation payments for loss in value of wheat will be issued by the Farm Service Agency (FSA). To claim compensation, the owner of the facility must submit to the local FSA office a Karnal Bunt Compensation Claim form, provided by FSA. The owner of the facility must also submit to FSA a copy of the Emergency Action Notification or letter from an inspector under which the facility is or was quarantined; verification as to the actual (not estimated) weight of the wheat (such as a copy of a facility weigh ticket or a copy of the bill of lading for the wheat, if the actual weight appears on those documents, or other verification); and a copy of the receipt for the final sale of the wheat, showing the total bushels sold and the total price received by the owner of the grain storage facility. Claims for compensation must be received by FSA on or before October 8, 1998.

The Administrator may extend this deadline, upon request in specific cases, when unusual and unforeseen circumstances occur which prevent or hinder a claimant from requesting compensation on or before that date. (2) Decontamination of grain storage facilities. The owner of the facility will be compensated on a one time only basis for each grain storage facility for each covered crop year wheat for the direct costs of decontamination of the facility at the same rate described under paragraph (a) of this section (up to 50 per cent of the direct costs of decontamination, not to exceed $20,000 per grain storage facility). Compensation payments for decontamination of grain storage facilities will be issued by APHIS, and claims for compensation must be submitted in accordance with the provisions in paragraph (a) of this section. Claims for compensation must be received by APHIS on or before October 8, 1998. The Administrator may extend this deadline, upon request in specific cases, when unusual and unforeseen circumstances occur which prevent or hinder a claimant from requesting compensation on or before that date.
